Help us to help!

This new section of our website introduces environmental services and issues. Please use the menu on the left to navigate to the page of your choice.
It is no secret that the coral reefs of the world are under threat. Human impacts such as overfishing, pollution, sedimentation, anchor damage and the increasing water temperatures associated with gobal warming are having a dramatic effect.
Watercolours Diver can now get involved and make a difference! Reef Check has received international environmental awards for its work, and is the United Nations' official community-based reef monitoring programme.
IMPORTANT:
Peter and Anke are no longer on the islands and therefore we regret that the Reef Check Eco-Diver Course can no longer be taught by Watercolours Dive Centre.
If you are interested in completing a Reef Check course then why not contact them directly at www.reefcheck.org.my or wecare@reefcheck.org.my
Reef Check Eco-Diver Course (4 days)
Here on the Perhentian Islands we are lucky enough to still have relatively heathy reefs and we want to keep them that way! By monitoring our coral reefs using the Reef Check survey methodology we will have data available to alert us to declines in reef health. This data can be used by the Reef Check scientists and relevant departments to adjust management practices to prevent further decline or raise awareness.
You can sign up for a Reef Check Eco-Diver course with us to help gather more data on the health of our coral reef and associated organisms. It's a chance to help the environment as well as learning lots about the local marine life. This is a very satisfying course that will look great in your logbook.
You will learn all about the globally standardised Reef Check methodology as well as how to identify key indicator fish, invertebrates and substrates selected by Reef Check for global monitoring and conservation of coral reefs! The course finishes with completing a diving survey were the data you collect will be used by the Reef Check foundation.
The data we have collected has already been used by Reef Check and has been used for a number of purposes, including a many articles in the national press .Those who have taken the course have fully enjoyed every last bit.
Watercolours is one of Malaysia’s first Reef Check Training Facilities. Please help us gather this important data to document potential decline of our local reefs and the need for stronger management policies.
Please see our diving course pages for more information and prices.
